UK Minister: CO2 fines may be waived

The UK Energy Minister, Malcolm Wicks, has said that the UK Government may waive fines for greenhouse gas emissions if there is a shortage of energy this coming winter, according to a report in today’s Financial Times. He was speaking to the House of Commons Trade and Industry Select Committee, and emphasized that this action would only be undertaken in extreme circumstances.

According to the evidence to the Committee, concern is widespread among industry of an energy shortage in Britain this winter, which would have serious long-term effects.
