The Green Hills Of Scotland
The official ground-breaking ceremony for what will become Europe’s largest onshore windfarm was performed today by Secretary of State for Trade and Industry Alistair Darling.
The £300m Whitelee Windfarm, south of Glasgow, will continue Scotland’s history of providing power for the UK.
140 turbines will provide enough power for 200,000 homes and reduce emissions by an impressive quarter of a million tonnes of CO2.
Scottish energy production is already 4 times ‘greener’ than the UK average, with 16% coming from renewable sources.
The Government also today began its consultation seeking views from industry, investors and other stakeholders on how to reach the aim set out in the Energy Review of getting 20% of the UK’s electricity from renewables by 2020.
