Positive outcome from Montreal
The Montreal Meeting on Climate seems to have achieved a positive outcome. The BBC reported that the countries who had signed up to the Kyoto protocol agreed to extend the treaty beyond 2012, something which will strengthen confidence in emissions trading. Also, a broader group of countries agreed to talks on long-term measures, and this group included the USA. Their inclusion was despite the US delegation having walked out of the meeting the night before. The negotiating stance of the US delegation had come in for stinging criticism from former President Bill Clinton, in a rare interjection in US policy since leaving office, and this seems to have shamed the US delegation into signing.
