One tiny step for Australia (maybe)

A taskforce appointed by the Australian Government has recommended an international emissions trading scheme. The main motivation seems to be the protection of Australia’s commodity trade, rather than any reduction in greenhouse gas emissions or actions to tackle climate change. A pity that the current Australian Government — yet to ratify the Kyoto Protocol– lacks vision.

“An international emissions trading scheme with no target for reducing greenhouse pollution has been recommended by the taskforce appointed by the Prime Minister, John Howard.

An issues paper released by the taskforce yesterday says an international emissions trading scheme is preferable to a national one and that Australia needs to protect its economic interests in uranium and coal.”
