NY’s wind farm proposals
The FT has reported that the New York mayor, Michael Bloomberg is trying to convince investors to build wind farms in the Atlantic, and windmills on skyscrapers and around the ‘Big Apple’ to account for 10% of the city’s energy within 10 years. Billionaire oil tycoon and wind evangelist T. Boone Pickens has been looking for potential of wind farms across US, as a report from the Department of Energy suggests that 20% of the country’s electricity could be generated by wind by 2030.
“I think it would be a thing of beauty if, when [the Statue of Liberty] looks out on the horizon, she not only welcomes new immigrants but lights their way with a torch powered by an ocean windfarm,” said Mr Bloomberg at the National Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Interesting to see how Bloomberg goes with this. Australia, much like the US Eastern Seaboard, has an excellent wind resource however there has been strong opposition to wind energy from NIMBY’s and democrats. In my experience, offshore wind comes up against particularly strong opposition because people feel that the property value of the ocean view could be threatened.

Thanks, Jamie. In Britain, there’s also opposition to some wind-farming from the military, who believe that clusters of windmills may provide a way for an enemy air fleet to stage a surprise attack (such clusters apparently play havoc with radar detection).
