Massive CO2 savings from coal plant

Drax, which is both the largest coal-fired power plant in Europe and the UK’s biggest CO2 emitter, has unveiled plans to increase efficiency whilst cutting CO2 emissions, according to the BBC.

Their efforts are expected to save the planet from 1,000,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. As well as installing new turbines, they will be reducing the amount of coal burnt by instead burning a renewable plant biomass which absorbs as much CO2 when it grows as it does when it is burnt.

“The company has already set itself a target for 2009 of generating 10% of its electricity by burning biomass, such as willow sticks or elephant grass.”
