Green London

London’s mayor, Ken Livingstone, is planning tougher requirements on large building developments, under new targets for Green London.  Currently, large developments have to source 10% of their ongoing energy requirements from renewable energy sources, and Livingstone’s plan will increase this requirement to 20%.  He also aims to cut carbon emissions from London by 20% by 2015 and by 60% by 2050.  See the report in the FT.   I think this is the first city-specific emissions reduction plan in Britain; no doubt, other cities will follow suit.

The real question is whether Ken’s goal is attainable.
The 2050 goal is well beyond his mayorship.

It will also be interesting to see if there are any unexpected factors which determine how successful London and other cities are.
