EU postpone CO2 reduction plans

The EU was due to put forth proposals to cut CO2 emissions by 20% and use renewable energy to replace 20% of its energy by 2020 on December 5th in Bali. They have postponed the announcement of these plans till the new year after disagreements over the commission’s new targets and plans for car manufacturers’ carbon cuts on new cars, according to the Guardian.
Car manufacturers were due to be given three years to reduce emissions, expected to produce cars that emit up to 120g per Km by 2012. Green MEPs however argue that “the EU climate change strategy would be jeopardised” if car manufacturers were not bound to a tougher target of building cars to emit only 80g per Km. That would reduce 521m tonnes of CO2 per year compared with 239m tonnes under the previous proposals. According to a report presented to them, cars are responsible for 12% of EU emissions.

The EU has put forth proposals for the UN to “adopt a goal of a 30% cut” by 2020, however arguments arose about concern over the role of trading mechanisms for promoting the use of renewables to reach the target.
