Certified Emission Reductions (CERs)
Jos Cozijnsen of New Values has an interesting post about CERs - Certified Emission Reduction certificates which indicate that an organisation or project has reduced CO2 emissions by a certified amount. These will typically arise from Clean Development Mechanism projects in countries such as China and Indonesia. Eventually, these will be able to be traded and to be used against emissions when companies file their reports of actual emissions.
However, at the moment, they cannot be traded or used until national registries are established and linked. These systems are not expected to be in place until 2008.
