Nearly free bio-energy?

According to Wired magazine, Coskata, a start-up in Illinois, backed by General Motors, claims it can make ethanol for US $ 1 per gallon, and using any bio-matter, not just corn.
But let us hope the move to transform natural landscapes into biofuel farms does not make our carbon emission position worse, as this report suggests.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced that he is backing the proposals to increase targets for UK emissions reductions with full force. The new Climate Change Committee is expected to report on whether the current target of 60% reduction in emissions should be increased to 80% by 2050.
