California Dreaming?
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger made it law that California will aim to reduce its emissions by 25% by 2020.
The immediate concern is that many companies will simply relocate to avoid the tough demands.
This would of couse make it easier for California, but harder for the rest of the country if it ever follows suit.
However, Schwarzenegger is confident that it will, saying “…our federal government will follow us - trust me.”
There is also concern that this move has been politically motivated, though Schwarzenegger also signed another law on Wednesday that prohibits California utilities from signing long-term contracts to buy electricity from out-of-state, coal-fired power plants.
