Britain’s green-ish Budget
Chancellor Gordon Brown presented his 10th budget yesterday, announcing several green-friendly policies, including:
- Proposal to the World Bank for a US$20 billion fund to help developing countries deploy renewable energy pojects.
- A rise in April 2007 in the climate change levy (the special tax on electricity bills paid by British companies) from 0.43p per kilowatt hour. This is the first increase since the introduction of the levy in 2001.
- A new National Institute of Energy Technologies to develop low-carbon power sources.
- Changes to vehicle excise duty, with zero rate for car models with the lowest CO2 emissions.
- Support for installation of renewable energy in schools and hospitals, and for household energy-efficiency projects.
