A taxing matter
The UK’s Tax Office (Her Majesty’s Department of Revenue and Customs) has ruled that Government grants to private organizations to assist with energy saving and carbon emissions reduction will be subject to Value Added Tax. One organization affected is the Energy Saving Trust, who advise householders on reducing their energy consumption. They expect to reduce activities by about one-fifth (the level of VAT), and to make staff redundant. Is this the joined-up thinking which the Government promised when it was elected?
